Let's Look At Some of the Ways Republicans are Cheating, Lying, Passing Laws, and Ignoring Court Rulings on Laws That Have Been Ruled Unconstitutional

Let's Look At Some of the Ways Republicans are Cheating, Lying, Passing Laws, and Ignoring Court Rulings on Laws That Have Been Ruled Unconstitutional After They Sign Them Into Law

Gerrymandering, Voter (Suppression) ID Laws, Voter Intimidation, Posting Incorrect Information Ignoring Court Rulings, Cutting Early Voting Places in Low-Income or Minority Areas, SuperPACS Telling People To Stay Home and Vote By Texting "Hillary" to a Number (That Is Not Possible), and MUCH, MUCH, More!

Gerrymandering:

      Republican Governors and Republican-Controlled State Legislatures redraw the lines of voting districts that all but assure that Republicans will win, even when there are many more votes for the Democratic candidate. How Gerrymandering works and the current legal battles since the U.S. Supreme Court found in favor of the Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission in Arizona State Legislature v Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission  On June 29, 2015 the opinion of the U.S. Supreme Court was made, siding with the Independent Commission. But that doesn't, by itself, end gerrymandering. Any state that doesn't have an "Independent Commission" to redraw the voting district lines fairly have to petition and get a proposition on their General Election ballot to form, and authorize, an Independent Commission. You can be certain that the 31 states currently controlled by Republican Legislatures and Governors will not only fight this decision but in fact, like other actual laws, ignore it. Here is the latest on legal battles involving gerrymandering. And finally from North Carolina: The ‘smoking gun’ proving North Carolina Republicans tried to disenfranchise black voters.

Voter (suppression) ID Laws

     The aforementioned 31 Republican-controlled State Legislatures and/or states with Republican Governors have been busy creating, passing, and signing into law so-called Voter ID laws are supposedly to combat "Voter Fraud." The problem here is that the Republicans themselves conducted an investigation that found only 31 instances out of 1 BILLION votes were found. So all these laws are to prevent/discourage a problem that DOESN'T exist. They are actually being written and passed to discourage, suppress, and intimidate voters. Voters from low-income areas, minority voters, and the like. Many have been found to be extremely racist and in fact unconstitutional. Here are articles on Texas, Wisconsin, North Carolina, and more states that have had their laws knocked down. This is just one article showing why laws were deemed unconstitutional.  This is a Google search showing numerous results on Voter ID laws being shown to be racist and/or unconstitutional. Even after laws are determined to not be valid Republican Governors refuse to stop using the tactics that they had written into those laws! Texas Voter ID Law Violates Voting Rights Act Court Rules,  Here,  GOP voting restrictions struck down in three states. And finally, In the past two weeks, judges have ruled against voter-ID laws and other limits on voting in five states. In Wisconsin the State was told to provide free-voting-ID's but choose to lie to potential voters instead. Recordings show Wisconsin DMV workers giving wrong info on voter ID cards.

Cutting Early Voting Times and Locations

      Republican Governors are cutting early voting times and locations IN MINORITY and LOW-INCOME areas! In one instance this is how it works: North Carolina early-voting cuts could dampen black vote.County boards of elections have approved reducing early-voting hours in 23 of North Carolina’s 100 counties. Another eight counties plan to end early voting on the Sunday before Election Day, when a huge number of African-American voters tend to go to the polls." Republicans are closing early voting sites and limiting times specifically to disenfranchise minorities. Black Turnout Soft in Early Voting, Boding Ill for Hillary Clinton. North Carolina politicians are openly racist in their Voter (suppression) ID laws, voting restrictions and early voting changes. Dozens of North Carolina counties slash early voting weeks before Election Day. "Lenoir County near North Carolina’s eastern shore is more than 40 percent black, and there are more than double the number of registered Democrats than Republicans. But its Board of Elections is controlled by white Republicans, who recently voted to slash the number of early voting sites from four to one, and only open that location during weekday businesses hours and a couple of hours on Saturday morning."

Ignore the Trolls: You Definitely Cannot Vote Via Text

America’s electoral system is already kind of a mess. Now, Twitter trolls are doing their best to make it even more confusing by spreading disinformation about how to cast a ballot on election day. The latest example: Donald Trump supporters are spreading memes on Twitter in both English and Spanish, trying to trick Hillary Clinton supporters into thinking they can vote by text.
Don’t fall for them. There’s no such thing as voting by text.

NO! YOU CAN'T VOTE VIA A TEXT MESSAGE!

Donald Trump "Regrets" Saying the Wrong Things - A First

Regretting Saying Horrible Things Is Good

But Doesn't Change How Prepared To Be President He Is

John A. Smith Editor/Founder, August 19, 2016

www.wsj.com August 4 -10 2016

     Perhaps the tanking poll numbers finally made Donald Trump realize that he is taking any chance of being elected away. Maybe it was someone on his campaign staff, old or new. But yesterday in Charlotte North Carolina the presidential candidate, for the first time ever, said "Sometimes in the heat of debate and speaking on a multitude of issues you don't choose the right words, or you say the wrong thing, I have done that... and believe it or not, I regret it."

     Although it's nice to see him say he regrets some of the things he has said it obviously doesn't make up for the hateful, racist, divisive language he has directed at so many, for so long. Attacking a judge working a case against him who has a stellar record and calling him "unable" to do his job because his parents are Mexican is ludicrous. Mocking a reporter with a disability unconscionable. Attacking a gold star family totally disrespectful and "out of bounds."

     Saying he regrets some things he has said also doesn't prepare him to be President. He simply doesn't have enough knowledge about foreign affairs, or for that matter, domestic affairs. In an interview with George Stephanopolos he was asked about why his campaign had argued to take out the stipulation that they would supply weapons to Ukraine to fight off Russian aggression. His response was "I don't know," which he repeated time and time again. But then said in no uncertain terms ""you can take this, understand this, write it down, Russia is NOT going into Ukraine." He didn't know that Russia had taken Crimea TWO YEARS AGO! He then said "well you know, I hear, from many people that the people of Crimea wanted to be part of Russia." Recently he said he knows "more about ISIS" than our military Generals do. Mr. Trump, you DO NOT know more about ISIS than our military leaders. A staunch Republican recently said that when he is being told what reality is, "he doesn't want to learn it."

     Thanks for your regrets Mr. Trump, now go start learning something about our country, our people, and what it actually takes to be the President of the United States.

Seriously - Not Being Sarcastic - Is Trump A Sociopath or Is He Purposely Trying To Find A Way Out? Why Does Hillary Keep Telling The Same Old Lies Even After They've Been Disproved? What can We Do To Change The Broken Election Process?

Does Donald Trump REALLY Want Be President?

Photo by www.nydailynews.com

  The short answer is no. Yesterday in my post Trump & Clinton Continue Their Blatant Lies - But they're Really Not Good At It I expressed my thoughts about what I thought Trump's plan for the future was. It included the fact that I did not believe in any way, shape, or form, that Donald Trump, Republican Nominee for President of the United States would ever actually fulfill his duties as President of the United States should enough ignorant people allowed him to win. I didn't think he has a snowballs chance in hell but when you look at the polls you quickly realize that there are a large number of low-information, "I only watch Fox News," and/or simply stupid (not just dumb) voters in America.

     Yesterday on Morning Joe/MSNBC, Joe Scarborough said he had lunch with someone who is very close to Trump. He confirmed that Trump does not want to actually BE President. He told Joe that Donald's "best case scenario" would be to lose the election by one-half of one percentage point so that he could say "they stole the election from me" for the rest of his life. That is consistent with my thoughts. I wrote:

     A couple months after Donald Trump declared he was running for President, someone interviewing him showed him pictures of former President George W. Bush and of President Barack Obama, they were portrayed wearing garb of the country they were visiting (separate events) and Trump was asked if he would go to other countries and wear their traditional garb. Trump's response was a very quick "NO! no, I would have someone else do that." Donald Trump Jr. was sent to vet Governor John Kasich (R-OH) as a potential running mate for Trump. He asked Governor Kasich what he thought about being the most "powerful Vice President in the history of America." Kasich responded "how would that be?" Donald replied "you would be in charge of ALL domestic and foreign policy." Kasich said "but that's everything, what would President Trump be doing?" Donald Jr. replied "making America great again."

     Again, consistent with Trump never in a million years putting all his money in a trust, living on the President's salary of only $400,000/year, and being tied to the grueling schedule of the POTUS, it will NEVER happen!

Hillary Clinton Must Think Americans Are Complete Idiots

     Hillary Clinton, Democratic Nominee for the President of the United States continues to lie. She is again using old lies that have been totally rebuffed, contradicted, proven to be false. She knows that she is lying, she knows the American people knows she lying, and she doesn't care. In an article in The Atlantic on August 1, 2016 Why Can't Hillary Clinton Stop Lying?  "On Sunday, the former secretary of state told FOX News’ Chris Wallace that FBI Director James Comey cleared her of misleading the public about her rogue email server at the state department: “Director Comey said my answers were truthful, and what I’ve said is consistent with what I have told the American people, that there were decisions discussed and made to classify retroactively certain of the emails.” That’s wrong and she knows it, which makes it a lie."

     She is arrogant and counts on the American people being "low-information," gullible, uninformed, unable to seek out the truth, people who will vote for her no matter what she does, or says, because her opponent is uninformed, narcissistic, misogynistic, racist, who is hateful and losing his mind attacking a Gold Star family. While she is right about some people (Trump supporters) most Americans can see through her lies and will not vote for her.

What can the American Voter Do To Send Both Parties a Message That They Are Not Going To Stand For A Corrupt, Establishment, Two-Party System, and A Broken Election Process?

     American voters can vote for a 3rd party to show that they will vote for a 3rd party in future elections. I know, I' get these responses whenever I bring up voting for a 3rd party candidate, and here are my responses[Reprinted from August 2, post Trump & Clinton Continue Blatant Lies - But They're Really Not Good At It

 1) "I would but I'm afraid to because I don't want Trump to win." Response: Trump will NOT win this election, not even the Republicans want that. Their party has been hijacked by him. Even though this presidential election is the most important in decades due to the fact that anywhere from two to five U.S. Supreme Court Justices will be appointed I do not fear Trump winning. Today on Morning Joe/MSNBC Joe Scarborough said he had talked to someone very close to Trump and that friend said that Trump believes his best outcome to be beat by a half a percentage point so he Could say "the election was stolen" for the rest of his life. This falls right in with what I've believed for some time. Trump would NOT take on the duties of POTUS, he's having fun because he's a mega-narcissist and getting tremendous attention on the campaign. See"Donald Trump Does NOT Want To Be President - He Will Never Take On The Duties of the POTUS" below.

2) "A third-party candidate doesn't have a snowballs chance in hell of winning." Response: No, they don't. But if we send a message that we won't stand for a rigged two party system, AND fight injustices like the media block out of 3rd party candidates, AND that we're done putting up with the current, corrupt, disrespectful, politicians that don't represent us, but represent 1%er's and large corporations, by a noticeable percentage of voters voting for a 3rd party candidate, we CAN CHANGE FUTURE ELECTIONS! The "movement" will be moving forward and growing as the message of "we WILL vote for 3rd party candidates" is acknowledged.

3) "Although I like a lot of what is in Dr. Jill Stein's platform, there are things I disagree with." Response: You're not going to find a candidate running that is for all the positions that you are for, in ANY party. You certainly aren't going to find everything you want in what Trump and Clinton are saying and what they will actually do. Again how can you vote for someone like Trump who yesterday said "she has no right to criticize my campaign, she couldn't even beat Bernie." George Stephanopoulos had to remind him that "she DID beat Bernie," and Trump said "barely." Really?!

4) "What can we really do to get the "movement" or "revolution" to gain traction? Response: We can get behind groups, organizations, activists, that support 3rd party candidates and help their chances for future elections i.e. Anonymous Launches Campaign to Oppose Media Blackout of Green Candidate

5)  "We only have 98 days left before the election, what can we really get done?" Response: We can do a lot. We can get a percentage of the vote to make the two current parties see that we ARE ready to vote for 3rd parties. We can support, and work towards, getting obstacles for 3rd party candidates removed, so that in a future election a 3rd party candidate will actually have a chance to win!

Voting For A 3rd Party Candidate Won't "Give Trump A Win" But It Will Change The Way Our Election Process And The 1%er Owned Media Do Business In The Future

     It is obvious that Dr. Jill Stein doesn't have "a snowballs chance in hell" of winning the presidential election but that doesn't mean that she can't do a lot for the American people,  the broke election process we are enduring, and 3rd party candidates in the future.  The media blackout on 3rd party candidates is not even disputed. Bernie Sanders, the Democratic primary, but he did do many good things, he got many issues put into the Democratic platform, he brought many young people into the election process, he got over 8 million people to make an average donation of $27 showing that you don't need 1%er's, corporations, and special interests, to make a run for office. Should a third party candidate get a respectable number of votes it will increase efforts by many to fight the issues surrounding 3rd party candidates for future elections. Issues like the media block, donations to 3rd parties, and many other obstacles that exist today.

Which 3rd Party Candidate Has The Best Chance of Sending The Message?

     Dr. Jill Stein, Presumptive Green Party candidate for President of the United States. @jillstein2016 - Jill2016 Jill Stein for President on Twitter, on Facebook Jill Stein for President 2016, is a candidate that is currently on the ballot in 31 states, her campaign is currently petition in 15 states, filed and awaiting results in 2 states and can be written in in Indiana and North Carolina. Look at Jill Stein's bio on Wikipedia   and the Green Parties Platform and see if your willing to send a very important message to the Republicans and Democrats.

How Fair Are Our Elections? Do the Democrats Have a Chance of Winning Back the House?

 Gerrymandering, Voter ID Laws Created for a Virtually Non-Existent Problem, Voter Suppression, Disenfranchising Voters, How Fair Are Our Elections?

Original meme by www.Facebook.com/StoptheObstructionistTeaParty and www.Medic3569.blogspot.com

 Republicans have passed "Voter ID" laws in 34 states that often address things other than preventing people to vote when their not eligible. Laws that restrict early voting hours, types of ID acceptable, not extending voting hours when their are long lines, limiting the number of voting stations in particular areas (where Democrats are more likely to vote,) all suppress, and disenfranchise the vote of minorities and other specified voting demographics.

 A twitter friend of mine @HenryStradford  tweeted this: "The only true Democracy is India...imagine that! 1+Billion people...consider the logistics of holding elections. Yet, they do.." I have to wonder if he's right.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The following is from a Center For American Progress Action Fund article on January 16, 2014:

  With election administration delegated to officials and boards in more than 3,000 counties and localities in the United States, the ease with which one exercises his or her right to vote can depend on where he or she lives. Not only do state voting laws differ across the nation, even within a state, county-based election administration varies widely.

  Take, for example, Florida’s Duval County, which during the 2012 election had provisional ballots cast at a rate four times higher than the state average. This is particularly alarming given that Duval County also rejected more than 34 percent of the provisional ballots cast in the county during the 2012 election. Similarly, voters in Indiana’s Tippecanoe County cast provisional ballots at a rate more than seven and a half times the state average. While provisional ballots are legally prescribed and serve as a fail-safe mechanism that allow voters to cast a ballot when questions regarding his or her eligibility to vote arise, both examples raise questions as to why these counties issued provisional ballots at rates so much higher than their state’s average.

Anything Different in the Upcoming Elections?

(CNN) -- The midterm elections are around the corner. The big question will obviously be what happens to control of the House and Senate. But control of Congress is only one part of the equation. There are a series of issues that will shape the individual races that will tell us a lot about which way American politics is heading.

 Former Ohio Rep. Steven LaTourette and the Main Street Partnership, a group with strong backing from the corporate world, are trying to counteract the power of the tea party, which they believe is damaging the standing of the GOP. "We want our party back," LaTourette explained to the The New York Times.

 The most visible battle between a mainstream Republican and tea party Republican is taking place in Kentucky, where Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is facing a challenge from Matt Bevin in the primary. In Texas, the controversial right-wing Rep. Steve Stockman is running against Sen. John Cornyn.

 There are certain must-wins for Democrats if they are to show that they are capable of taking advantage of this moment. In Florida's 13th District, Alex Sink, a well-known and well-respected Democrat, is attempting to win the seat of long-term Republican veteran Bill Young, who recently died, leaving  open this highly competitive district. If Democrats can't win this special election on March 11, it will signal trouble. Read More of CNN.COM's Five Big Questions on 2014 Elections

Retirements Hurt Democrats' House Prospects

AP Photo

 The Democratic quest to win the House majority has always been something close to mission impossible. A procession of lawmakers opting for retirement is pushing the prize even further beyond the party’s grasp.
Seventeen seats shy of the majority and confronting an electoral landscape tilted against them, Democrats have virtually no room for error in the November midterms. Yet the problems they’re encountering of late are coming from within their own ranks. Read More Politico - House Democrats Retiring

Democrats Will Need to Get Out the Vote To Have Any Chance

 With all the Republicans efforts to tip the elections in their favor through Voter ID laws, suppressing votes, disenfranchising voters, gerrymandering, and the backing of the ultra-rich and corporations, it will be very difficult, to say the least, to keep control of the Senate, much less, to win back the House.  If the U. S. Supreme Court sides with McCutcheon in the McCutcheon v FEC, which it heard arguments for on October 8, 2013, it will be that much harder and a total disaster for our beloved country. The U. S. Supreme Court's 2010 Citizens United decision created "Corporate Personhood" and removed limits on how much corporations could contribute to political campaigns, and donors could be kept unanimous. As you can see in the meme below top donors from the fossil fuel industry contributed  over $11M in the 2012 election cycle. If the court sides with McCutcheon those same donors could contribute over $312M, or, 27x more.

Fixing a Big Part of the Problem - Taking Money out of Politics

Overturn Citizens United

 There is a growing movement across the country that is calling for the U.S. Supreme Court's decision, in the 2010 Citizens United v FEC case to overturn it through one or more amendments to the U.S. Constitution.

 There are currently Constitutional amendments pending in the Congress that would overturn Citizens United by (1) making it clear that corporations do not have constitutional rights, such as "free speech," which are only for natural persons; and by (2) restoring Congress' and the states' authority to limit campaign gifts and spending. See H.J. Res 20 and  H.J. Res 21.

Overturning the disastrous Citizens United decision is NOT a partisan issue, it is an Across-the-Aisle effort. In a 2010/2011 Peter Hart poll 79% of Americans, including 68% of Republicans, 82% of Independents, and 87% of Democrats "support a Constitutional amendment that would overturn the Citizens United decision and make clear that corporations do not have the same rights as people."

Furthermore, a 2012 Associated Press poll found that 83% of Americans, including 81% of Republicans, 78% of Independents, and 85% of Democrats believe "there should be limits on the amount of money corporations, unions, and other organizations can contribute to outside organizations trying to influence campaigns for President, Senate, and U.S. House."

Free Speech For People has compiled:
  • 111 Republicans who have called for an amendment to overturn Citizens United;
  • 9 Republicans who have criticized Citizens United for it's claim that corporations have constitutional   rights; and
  • 10 more Republicans who have criticized Citizens United in more general terms.

Stanford Law Professor Pam Karlan is Now Our Best Offense Against the Bogus Voter ID Laws - Good Job Prez

The Dept. of Justice Calls in the Big Guns to Combat Voter ID Laws

Photo by www.acslaw.org

 It’s difficult to exaggerate the prominence Stanford Law Professor Pam Karlan enjoys within the progressive legal community. Karlan is one of the most active members of the Supreme Court bar — among other things, she co-authored the brief that convinced the justices to strike down the anti-gay Defense of Marriage Act last June. She is a former litigator for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, and she is among the most widely regarded voting rights experts in the nation. If President Obama had shown more courage in the early years of his presidency, or if Senate Democrats had deployed the nuclear option sooner, she would be a federal appellate judge today. Many Court watchers, including myself, would choose her if we could place only one person on the Supreme Court.

 So when the Justice Department revealed on Friday that Karlan would become the nation’s top voting rights attorney, it was as if Marsellus Wallace called up the many voters being disenfranchised in states like Texas and North Carolina, and told them that he’s sending The Wolf. States That Have Enacted Voter ID Laws Since Republicans Gained Many Governorships and Control of State Legislatures in 2011

 Alabama, Kansas, Mississippi, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin all passed new voter ID laws in their 2011, 2012, or 2013 legislative sessions.  For each state, this memorandum provides: a brief description of the substance of the new law; its effective date; the types of photo IDs accepted; exceptions to the ID requirement, if any; any affidavit alternative to providing a photo ID; the photo ID requirements for early and absentee voting, if any; provisions relating to obtaining free ID; and public education requirements.[1]

 [1] For purposes of this memorandum, “exceptions” to the photo ID requirement refers to categories of voters exempted from providing photo ID to vote.  An “affidavit alternative” is a procedure whereby certain voters without qualifying ID can execute an affidavit to either obtain a regular ballot or to accompany a provisional ballot in lieu of providing photo ID.

Here are just a few of the summaries:

NORTH CAROLINA

Effective Date: Starting in January 2014, poll officials will ask voters for a photo ID (and give notice it will be required in 2016) but no photo ID is required to vote until January 2016.

Acceptable Forms of ID
Every qualified voter shall present photo ID bearing reasonable resemblance to that voter to a local election official before voting.  “Photo identification” means any of the following that contains a photograph and that shall have an expiration date and be unexpired, provided that people over 70 may use an expired ID that was unexpired on their 70th birthday. For ID (4) through (6), no expiration date is required if the issuance date is fewer than 8 years before it is presented.
  • North Carolina driver’s license, including learner’s permit or provisional license.
  • Special non-operator’s identification card
  • Passport
  • Military identification card (no requirement that it have a printed expiration or issuance date)
  • Veteran’s identification card (no requirement that it have a printed expiration or issuance date).
  • Tribal enrollment card
  • A driver’s license or nonoperator’s identification card issued by another state if the voter’s voter registration was within 90 days of the election.
Exemptions from Photo ID Requirement
  • People who, because of age or disability, are permitted to use curbside voting.
  • Religious objectors who have filed a declaration at least 25 days before the election, or who sign declaration in-person at county board of elections after voting provisional ballot.
  • Victims of natural disaster resulting in disaster declaration and occurring within 60 days of the election
  • Law contains no affidavit alternative.
Provisional Ballot Counted if Acceptable Photo ID Later Presented
  • Provisional ballot counted if acceptable ID is presented in person at the county board of elections by noon on the day prior to convening of the election canvass.
Free Photo ID
Registered voters who do not have acceptable photo ID may sign a declaration to such effect and shall be issued an ID card for free after their registration is verified. Such declaration, if false or fraudulent, is a Class I felony.
  • Permits challengers to challenge a voter for failure to present photo ID.
  • Expands types of facilities offering voter registration services
  • Creates Voter Information Verification Advisory Board to assist in election administration.
proof of residence address.
Public Education Requirements
The Elections Director “may advertise the availability and the use of the [voter ID] card,” but this is not required.

 NEW HAMPSHIRE

Effective Date: New Hampshire’s law was first passed on June 27, 2012, after the legislature overrode a gubernatorial veto. In 2013, the list of acceptable forms of ID was amended further, and the effective date is now September 15, 2013.

Photo IDs Permitted
Prior to voting, a voter must provide one of the following valid forms of photo ID (the name on the ID must be “substantially similar” to that of the voter registration record):
  • A driver’s license issued by the state of New Hampshire or any other state;;
  • An identification card issued by the director of motor vehicles;
  • A United States armed services identification card;
  • A United States passport or a passcard;
  • Any other valid photo identification issued by federal, state, county, or municipal government;
  • A valid student identification card (all student identification cards issued after January 1, 2014 are required to have a date of issuance; in all elections before September 1, 2018, student ID cards without a date of expiration or issuance will still be acceptable);
  • A photo identification not authorized specifically above, but determined to be legitimate by the supervisors of the checklist, the moderator, or the town or city clerk
The ID cannot have expired more than five years ago, except that anyone 65 years or older may use an expired form of identification that would otherwise be deemed valid.

Non-Photo IDs Permitted
Verification of the person’s identity by a moderator, supervisor of the checklist, or the town or city clerk is also acceptable.

Affidavit Alternative
There is a qualified voter affidavit that can be filled out and submitted in lieu of presenting photo identification. If the voter submits an affidavit, the voter can cast a regular ballot and a letter of identity verification will be sent by the Secretary of State. The letter will be mailed 60 days after the election, unless it is a primary in which case the letter will be mailed 60 days after the general election, and if the election is a regularly scheduled municipal election, the letter will be mailed by the July 1 or January 1 next following the election.
The Secretary of State will mark the envelope with instructions to the U.S. Post Office not to forward the letter and to provide address correction information. The letter will notify the person that someone who did not present valid photo identification voted using his or her name and address, and instruct the person to return the letter within 90 days which a written confirmation that the person voted, or contact the attorney general immediately. Any letters that are returned as undeliverable or any letters returned saying the person did not vote will be referred to the attorney general for an investigation into fraudulent voting.

Free IDs
The fee for voter identification cards will be $10, with exceptions for people who turn in his or her driver’s license before its expiration date if they are over 65. A person who requires a photo identification card for voting may obtain a voucher from his or her town or city clerk or the Secretary of State exempting the person from the fee.

Public Education Requirements
The Secretary of State will prepare an explanatory document explaining the proof of identity requirements, and will provide copies of the document to all towns and wards so it will be available to all persons registering to vote and at polling places at each election. The Secretary of State will take whatever measures he or she deems necessary to educate the public including displaying the information on the Department of State’s website, and will provide explanatory information to media outlets that request the information and encourage such outlets to assist the department in educating the public.

Editor's Note:  While most Voter ID Laws are being passed by Republican Governors, New Hampshire’s law was first passed on June 27, 2012, after the legislature overrode a gubernatorial veto.

Effective Date: The law was passed with an effective date of March 14, 2012, but it was challenged in Pennsylvania state court and is subject to a preliminary injunction. Under the terms of that injunction, voters may be asked for photo ID at the polls during the November election but voters lacking such ID can still vote a regular ballot.

Photo IDs Permitted
Prior to voting, a voter must provide one of the following valid forms of photo ID:
  • Photo ID issued by the department of transportation that is not more than twelve months past the expiration date;
  • Unexpired photo ID issued by the U.S. government that includes an expiration date;
  • U.S. military photo ID that does not contain an expiration date, but notes that the expiration date is indefinite;
  • Unexpired municipal employee Photo ID that includes an expiration date;
  • Unexpired student photo ID from an accredited public or private higher education institution that includes an expiration date; or
  • Unexpired photo ID from certain state care facilities that includes an expiration date.
Non-Photo IDs Permitted
A voter who has a religious objection to being photographed must provide a valid-without-photo driver’s license or a valid-without-photo ID card issued by the department of transportation.

Limited Exception for Indigent Voters
A voter who is unable to produce the required ID on the grounds that he or she is indigent and cannot obtain such ID for free must cast a provisional ballot, and provide an affirmation to the county board within six days, affirming his or her identity and indigent status, or the ballot will not count.

Absentee Voting ID Requirements
An absentee voter who has been issued a current and valid driver’s license must provide his or her license number. An absentee voter who has not been issued a current and valid driver’s license can provide the last four digits of his or her social security number. A qualified absentee voter who is entitled to vote by absentee ballot under the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act or by an alternative ballot under the Voting Accessibility for the Elderly and Handicapped Act will not be required to provide proof of ID.

Free IDs
The department of transportation must issue free voter ID cards to any registered voter who provide an affirmation that they lack the ID the law requires and require ID for voting purposes.

Public Education Requirements
Between the effective date of the law and September 17, 2012, the photo ID specified in the law will be requested but not required. During this time frame, if any voter who will be required to produce photo ID starting on September 17, 2012 is unable to produce the photo ID requested, election officials will provide him or her with written information about the new law’s requirements.

 One of the states laws NOT summarized in the report by the Brennan Center for Justice at New York Law School is Texas' Voter (suppression) ID law and discriminatory gerrymandering.

 In a June 25, 2013 Huffington Post article "Harsh Texas Voter ID Law "immediately" Takes Effect After Voting Rights Act Ruling: WASHINGTON -- Texas will "immediately" enact a voter ID law that a panel of federal judges ruled last year would impose “strict, unforgiving burdens on the poor," a top state official said Tuesday. The decision to go forward with a measure that those federal judges called “the most stringent in the country" comes after the Supreme Court ruled that a key provision of the landmark Voting Rights Act was unconstitutional.

 In blocking those redistricting maps last year, a separate panel of federal judges ruled that the government "provided more evidence of discriminatory intent than we have space, or need, to address" in their opinion. Attorney General Eric Holder cited the Texas redistricting case in his statement criticizing the Supreme Court's ruling.

In a  CBS News/AP release on August 30, 2012 "Texas' Voter ID  Law Struck Down in Federal Court they addressed the Voter ID Law and the redistricting (gerrymandering) that's happening in Texas.

 "The court ruled that the new voter identification law in Texas would have an unconstitutional impact on the right to vote for poor people and especially Hispanics and African-Americans - the same minorities who were protected earlier in the week from Republican redistricting by another federal court panel.
This is the third court ruling in the past three days out of the federal courts striking down Republican voter laws. A federal panel on Wednesday blocked a Florida registration measure from continuing in effect. South Carolina's strict photo ID law is on trial in front of another three-judge panel in the same federal courthouse. A court ruling in the South Carolina case is expected in time for the November election.

 An appeal is likely in the Texas case, but there is no guarantee that the U.S. Supreme Court is going to want to get involved in this case, or any of these voting rights case, before the election. On the other hand, the justices in 2008 said that states could impose some voter identification restrictions.
Federal court finds discrimination in new Texas voting maps Earlier in the week, Texas' voting districts were thrown again into upheaval after a federal court found evidence of discrimination in new district maps drawn and approved by the state's Republican-controlled Legislature last year.

 The U.S. District Court in Washington wrote in a 154-page opinion that the maps don't comply with the federal Voting Rights Act because state prosecutors failed to show Texas lawmakers did not draw congressional and state Senate districts "without discriminatory purposes."

 The ruling applies to the maps originally drawn by the Legislature in 2011, and not interim maps drawn by a San Antonio federal court that are to be used in the upcoming elections this November.
CBS News legal analyst Andrew Cohen said the Supreme Court likely will have the final say the case of voting maps, and it's been quite supportive of Republican redistricting efforts in the recent past. There's likely to be some sort of expedited appeal.

 This ruling was a blow to the GOP because it keeps in place the current voting districts."

Profiles of the (some of the) 37 Republicans the could Lose Their Seats for Shutting Down the Government

Another problem Democrats have in taking back the House in 2014 is gerrymander, in addition to the Suppressive, discriminatory Voter ID laws. But the Republicans can sometimes be their own worse enemies. For example when they allowed the far right-wing of their party to run a campaign to shut down the government in yet another attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare.) This was a strategy that now even the TeaPublicans that pushed it, admit they "didn't really" think it would work. Speaker of the House of Representatives finally stood up to the outside "groups" like Heritage Action, Club for Growth, and Freedom Works, after the federal budget agreement by House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan and Senate Budget Committee Chairwomen Patty Murray was passed. We'll have to see if people can remember the shutdown when the all-important 2014 elections come to pass. This writer will remind Americans from time-to-time who really was responsible for the government shutdown despite the outrageous claims of the unstable TeaPublicans and the money-making, don't care what they say is outright lies, the more sensational the lies the bigger the ratings,  Fox News commentators and Reporters.

3. California -- District 49: Rep. Darrell Issa
Cook Partisan Voting Index: R+4

darrell issa
Issa -- the second-richest member of congress -- has served as the representative for California's 49th congressional district since 2001. The district, which covers the northern coastal areas of San Diego County as well as a small southern portion of Orange County, has voted largely in favor of Republican representatives on local and national levels for more than the last decade -- although Democrats Lynn Schenk and Susan Davis were able to break into the House seat in 1993 and 2001, respectively.
Romney won the district with 52.4 percent of votes in 2012, but Barack Obama won 49 percent of votes in 2008, beating out McCain by 1 percent.

4. Colorado -- District 3: Rep. Scott Tipton
Cook Partisan Voting Index: R+4

scott tipton
Colorado’s third congressional district, located in western and south-central Colorado, has been represented by Tipton since 2010, after he defeating three-term incumbent Democrat John Salazar. Tipton's relatively short stint in office has already been marred by potential ethics violations. Coupled with the district’s positive voting record toward Democratic representatives -- excluding national elections -- a general Democratic contender stands a strong chance of securing the seat in 2014.
Romney won 51.8 percent of Tipton's district in 2012.

5. Florida -- District 7: Rep. John L. Mica
Cook Partisan Voting Index: R+5

john mica
Mica has represented Florida’s seventh congressional district since 1993. In recent years, a population increase in has boosted the region’s economy, pushing economic stability to the top of the local agenda -- perhaps explaining the district's current hesitation to reelect a Republican whose party has largely been blamed for the government shutdown’s costly economic consequences.
Although Republicans have won the district's presidential vote since 1992, with Romney securing 51.8 percent of votes in 2012, the district's significant proportion of independent voters may contribute to a turn toward Democrats.

6. Florida -- District 15: Rep. Dennis Ross
Cook Partisan Voting Index: R+8

dennis ross
Although Ross has only served as a House Republican since 2011, his constituents may be ready for change. Formerly the 12th and reassigned in 2013 as Florida’s 15th, Ross’s right-leaning district encompasses the northern parts of Hillsborough County and Polk County, including many of Tampa’s eastern suburbs.
Republicans have dominated the district’s congressional politics since 1995. In 2012, Romney won 53.3 percent of the district's votes.
